Tips for When Going Out with your Baby

Want to bring your baby out for a bit of sunlight and fresh air?  Are you planning to visit some friends and family?  Any of these scenarios shouldn’t be a problem!  You can do so whenever you feel comfortable and less anxious about exposing your baby to the outside world. However, the baby’s comfort, safety and security must be the top priority at all times.

Preparing for an Outing with the Little One

Whether your trip will be a quick stroll in the park, a road trip or even air travel, it is essential that you prepare for all possible scenarios.  Here are some considerations:

Weather Conditions – Check the forecast for the day if it will be too hot or too cold or the possibility of rain.  Try to avoid going out if the weather conditions might be too extreme, as the baby is still too fragile to handle this.

Peak Sun Hours – An infant’s skin is sensitive and would easily burn if exposed to the harsh sun.   Babies should always be kept away from direct sunlight and covered with shade and lightweight clothing.

Exposure to Crowds – Babies have a delicate immune system.  Exposing them to large crowds or being in close physical contact with other people will also expose them to germs that may endanger their health.

Going Out Essentials for your Baby

Diaper Bag / Changing Bag – This bag probably is the key to any of your trips and will hold everything you’ll need, more than just the diapers.  Depending on the circumstances and duration of your outing, It should be convenient and portable but large enough to carry changing and feeding supplies.

Here are just some of the important items that should be in your changing bag:

  • Diapers – Pack at least one diaper for every two hours you are outside, plus some spare, for good measure.
  • Rash Cream
  • Changing Pad
  • Wet Wipes
  • Blankets
  • Plastic bag to contain soiled diapers and clothes
  • Breastfeeding cover (if breastfeeding)
  • Pacifier (if needed)
  • Pre-Measured Formula and Water (if bottle feeding)
  • Baby Bottles and Nipples (if bottle feeding)
  • Security Toy or Blanket
  • Spare clothes
  • Additional cover from the sun and weather (extra jackets, beanies for the cold, etc)

Car Seat – Depending on the country or state you are living in or travelling to, car seats are required for kids up to about seven years old.  It can be rear-facing, forward-facing or a booster seat, based on the child’s age.

Stroller, Carrier or Sling – These help you get out and about while carrying your child.  Pushing your child in a stroller relieves you of bearing the weight the whole time. But if the place is too cramped or crowded, you can opt for a carrier or a sling for a more hands-free experience while closely holding the baby.

Spare clothes, water and snacks – Now these are for the parents or carers of the child.  Anticipate that the child will have accidents that may stain (or stink up) your clothes as well so better be prepared! Don’t forget to pack something to easily munch on and drink in case you don’t get the chance to sit down and have a meal.
